Hastings Culture and Job Offers

There are a lot of museums and cultural events to discover in Hastings. Discovering new things will be a perfect complement in your new student life in Hastings. Opening your mind to new cultures is a good way to improve your development.

Most important buildings from the late medieval period are the two churches of the Old Town: All Saints and St Clement's.
At the beach near the Old Town are the so-called "Net shops", which are said to be unique to Hastings, even though similar huts can be found in Whitby — The huts are wooden constructions, weather boarded and tarred, of different shapes and sizes, used for storage purposes. The buildings had been built tall and narrow to avoid payment of ground tax. Eventually, the huts were never used for drying nets. Until the present, this had been a popular misconception, whereas nets were dried on the beach or on a piece of land known as the Minnis.

Apart of these sights, lots of students and tourists take a look at Hastings´ castle. It´s also something you don´t want to miss out!
In front of the castle is an elegant Georgian terrace, Pelham Crescent, at the centre of which is the classical church of St Mary in the Castle (its name recalling the old chapel in the castle above) now in use as an arts centre. The building of the crescent and the church needed further cutting away of the castle hill cliffs.
For many years, the traffic intersection at the town centre was marked by "The Memorial", which is a tower commemorating Albert the Prince Consort, has subsequently been demolished.
The bathing pool at St. Leonards has been regarded in its day as one of the best open-air swimming and diving complexes in Europe, but has been closed some years ago and has in the mean time become part of a holiday camp.

One of the most notable recent architectural changes has been the demolition of the 1930s railway station and has been replaced by a modernist glass and steel structure and was opened in 2004. A similar station to the original remains open elsewhere and is a listed building.
As you can see, Hastings can offer enough to satisfy the needs of every student who comes to this city!
